Visitor Information - Caring for our Swans

The swans at Seventy Acres Lake in the River Lee Country Park have always been popular but recently they’ve been getting too much attention, resulting in them being over fed.

On an average day if you stand by the view point near the Bittern Information Point for half an hour you will see at least two groups of families come to feed them each with a whole loaf of white bread. White bread holds very little nutritional value for the birds, swelling inside their stomach filling them up and stopping them eating their normal food.

The swans are also becoming increasingly tame and are often encouraged to climb the steps up to the path for food where they are in danger of being attacked by a dog.

To combat these problems North Rangers have put posters up around the view point providing information on the types of food and quantities that should be fed to the swans. A temporary paling fence has also been erected on either side of the view point to prevent the swans from climbing up to the path.
