Birds and Bypasses

This months walk takes us to Rye Meads and Stanstead Innings.

Starting at the historic Rye House Gate House where we all meet we then move on to Rye Meads which is a superb spot to see vast numbers of birds, plus wetland mammals and reptiles. The wetland areas are extensive, with flood meadows, reed beds, ditches, streams and open water supporting all kinds of fascinating life. Managed by the RSPB as a bird reserve this site is worth a visit any time of the year.

Leaving the reserve we take the river path to Stanstead Lakes tucked away by the quiet Hertfordshire village of Stanstead Abbots. A walk along the northern edge of the lake will take us to Stanstead Innings which comprises three wild flower meadows, three lakes and a wet woodland area.

The site was once a gravel extraction site, but now the pits are flooded and a host of wildlife has made the nature reserve their home. Whether you’re a seasoned ‘twitcher’ or just love natural places this walk is for you.
